NYS Registered Apprenticeship Training Programs
Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Training & Education Program has five NYS registered apprenticeship programs open for enrollment.
A 4 year program with 6,700 hours of on-the-job training combined with 144 hours of related classroom instruction per calendar year. A day in the life of a Bricklayer, Mason & Plasterer apprentice consists of but is not limited to the following work practices; Laying standard and specialty Masonry units, cutting masonry units, mixing mortar & grout. Installing re-bar, grout and insulating materials. Building footings and foundations. Building arches, columns, piers and corners. Building fireplaces & chimneys. Installing masonry anchoring devices & lintels. Installing masonry panels, rain screen and veneer systems. Installing masonry flashing, counter flashing and system components. All plastering products, applications, procedures and installation methods.
A 3-year program with 6,000 hours of on-the-job training combined with 144 hours of related classroom instruction per calendar year. A day in the life of a Pointer, Caulker & Cleaner apprentice consists of but is not limited to the following work practices; Pointing & re-pointing of masonry joints, cleaning masonry buildings using methods and materials such as pressure washing, sand blasting and chemical applications. Repairing and replacing masonry units natural and manufactured. Repairing and patching concrete using methods and materials per specification. Prepairing and mixing of all cementitious materials and admixture for application. Application of weatherproofing and waterproofing sealants, coatings and air barriers using related tools and equipment. Mold making and casting to replace masonry elements and components. Rigging and maintenance of all scaffolding and equipment.
A 3- year program with 4,500 hours of on-the-job training combined with 144 hours of related classroom instruction per calendar year. A day in the life of a Cement Finisher or Cement Mason apprentice consists of but is not limited to the following work practices; Use of levels, transits & lasers to set screeds and forms to height. Straightedge (Rod) and bull float concrete. Float, trowel, edge, joint and broom concrete to different finishes. Layout expansion and control joints per design. Form, pour and finish sidewalks, driveways, steps, copings, curbs and gutters. Patch, repair, renovate, rub, brush and acid wash concrete. Use of related equipment such as laser screeds, trowel machines and concrete saws. Use of epoxies, polymers, bonding adgents and sealants. Install and finish architectural, ornamental and stamped concrete.
A 3-year program with 6,000 hours of on-the-job training combined with 144 hours of related classroom instruction per calendar year. A day in the life of a Tile Setter apprentice consists of but is not limited to the following work practices; Layout of floors and walls for installation. Repair and patch tile, float, screed and scratch walls as preparation. Install all other types of substrates such as blue board, Dura-Rock and other moisture resistant materials. Prepare and install tile for showers, jambs, countertops, sinks, walls, floors, ceilings, steps, mantels, hearths, pools, domes, arches and columns. Clean, treat, and seal surfaces including waterproofing and caulking.
A 2-year program with 3,750 hours of on-the-job training combined with 144 hours of related classroom instruction. A day in the life of a Tile, Marble & Terrazzo Finisher apprentice consists of but is not limited to the following work practices; Grouting and finishing of all types of tile, mable and terrazzo. Grinding and polishing of all types of terrazzo surfaces. Preperation of all types of walls, floors and countertops for the installation of mortars. Mix mortars, epoxy, resins, and adhesives. Handle and move job site materials from stockpile to point of installation. Clean, treat and seal surfaces using all industry accepted techniques. Use and maintanence of all related tools and equipment.
Minimum Requirements for Applicants
- Must be 17 years of age.
- Must have a valid drivers license.
- Must have reliable transportation to and from job sites and training courses.
- Must be physically able to perform the work as outlined.
- Must be a six month resident of local #2's geographical counties as follows;
Albany, Cayuga, Columbia, Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Montgomery, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, St. Lawrence, Warren, and Washington.
